June 2010

Duncan Gordon Chairman was our MC at the June club night in Stornoway and our guest artistes were the Roya Maclean Trio. Our local players started the first half of the night, and they were, on accordion: Ishbel Crichton, DB Macleod, Duncan Gordon, Graham Maclennan. On keyboards: Tracy Gordon, and on fiddle, Campbell, Caroline Macdonald, Donny and his young fiddlers, and the Nicolson fiddlers. The Roya Maclean Trio then took to the stage. With Roya were Coralea Mackay on fiddle and Nicky McMichan on drums. This was a very impressive performance, a superb range of tunes and her rendition of The Flying Scotsman was exquisite. There was also a smashing solo set from Coralea on fiddle. After the stramash it was back to our local players for the second half, Alex John Morrison on accordion, followed by Alex Murdo Macleod, Ian Tonkan Macdonald and Alex John Macleod, all accompanied by Violet Morrison on keyboard. And so, back to the Roya Maclean Trio, again, we were captivated by their performance, playing jigs, marches, strathspey and reels, and beautiful waltzes. They had the audience in the palm of their hands. On Friday Roya was adjudicator at the accordion and melodeon competitions at the local Mod, and when the last competition was over and the prizes had been handed out to the winners, she delighted everyone, especially the youngsters by playing a couple of sets on accordion, and then played at the ceilidh dance at night, all this on her special birthday. Happy Birthday Roya from all at our club. Congratulations to all our youngsters who competed at their competitions, to Sandy Maciver who came first in the melodeon competition, Craig Macleod who came first in the accordion and Krisell Macdonald who came second, to Campbell Scanlon who came second in the fiddle competition, well done to all of you.  Our guest artiste for July will be Calum Maclean.
